In honour of Google's 13th birthday, Mashable gave us 10 fun facts about the company that rose to dominate search and keep the promise they made in 2004: "Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one.". Here they are...
- The first Google Doodle was created to be an "out of office" notification while its founders attended the Burning Man Festival in Nevada.
- The opening price for Google's stock was $85 per share. They're now worth more than $450 per share.
- The first Google storage was made of Lego.
- Google's first tweet was "I'm 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010"... or "I'm feeling lucky" in binary code.
- Google rents goats to keep weeds and brush under control at HQ in California.
- "Google" has made it in to the Merriam-Webster and Oxford dictionaries. Further Google linguistics include "Googler" - a staff member, "Noogler" - a new staff member.
- Google's offices are dog-friendly, and has its own office dogs. Cats aren't allowed.
- Google's first office snack was chewy sweets, Swedish Fish. The offices' culinary offerings have since grown to include more drinks, snacks, gourmet meals, and regular Summer BBQs. With all these tasty treats around, it's no surprise that many put on the Google 15, or 15 pounds soon after joining the company. Luckily for employees there's a Google gym as well.
- Since it's creation, the Google logo has been centred, and a Yahoo-like exclamation mark removed from the end of "Google".
- The Googleplex is home to a array of delights - from a T-Rex, to a Lego man, grown-up-size ball pits and more.
